A FANTASTIC book for teaching about haves/havenots
This book takes an extremely abstract concept and turns it into something that kids can easily understand. It tackles the idea of the "global village", in other words--if the world were a village of 100 people, so many would be literate, so many would be at war, so many would have clean water, etc. It's great because it takes extremely large numbers of people and breaks them down into averages so that kids can easily see how different peoples' lives are proportionately. The oil pastel/painting illustrations are visually interesting, and the facts are up to date and important. A great book for a social studies teacher.

The question is: Pets or Meat?
This is real Michael Moore--the Moore before he became commercially successful. In this documentary about his hometown of Flint, Michigan (and its subsequent demise after General Motors closed there), Michael Moore explores the issues faced by his bleak city. He also is on a mission to personally speak with the chairman of General Motors to ask some pointed questions. People are doing whatever it takes to survive, including selling rabbits (for pets or meat), and luckily Miss Michigan "supports employment". This is hilarious in parts, and horribly depressing in others. Like Fahrenheit 911, it definitely strikes a nerve. In this movie, though, Moore's aim is not necessarily to tick people off. It's more to inform. Be sure to see this if you haven't. It may be a documentary, but it's a lot more interesting than many feature films out there.

A great book of stories for Halloween!
Even though the title indicates that the book is of scary stories, it really is cute because of DePaola's cartoon-like illustrations. In addition, even though the characters are imps, goblins and ghosts, the stories are pretty harmless. Like all of DePaola's books, the story is told in cartoon panels, which helps kids follow the story closely. They can follow along with the reading and watch the stories unfold before their eyes. The illustrations are also really cute, and the stories fun to read. A great book of stories for Halloween that won't scare the socks off primary kids.
