Hi, I'm Janet. I have been painting and selling watercolors and oils professionally since 1996. The subjects I love most to paint are garden flowers, birds, animals, landscape and seascape. For reference, I use photos that I have taken, sketches that I have made or do the painting on-site with the subject right in front of me. My paintings will evoke in you a sense of quiet serenity each time you look at them. You will hear the bees humming, the birds chirping or the seagulls crying against the crash of the waves. If you purchase a new oil painting less than six months old, it will not be varnished. If you wish to varnish your painting, please wait six months before doing so. Oil paintings take that long exposed to the air to thoroughly cure. If you varnish before then, the varnish may crack. Use varnish specifically made for paintings, not furniture varnish which will darken and yellow with age. Before varnishing, gently clean the painting with a soft cloth damp-ened with plain water and dry for a couple of days. Then use a thin coat of Kamar or other spray varnish available at art supply stores. Why varnish? While not strictly necessary, varnish will restore the “just painted” freshness to an oil painting and can help preserve it.

Since works on paper such as watercolor paintings need a glass or plexiglass front, make sure to choose a frame with glass. Also, be sure that the depth of the frame will accommodate the mat, painting and backing board. Be careful about photo or document frames. They are often not deep enough. Also, the frame should have a hanging feature that is attached to the frame, not the backing board unless you are prepared to install this yourself! Ready-made frames include a paper mat and cardboard backing, both of which may contain acid. They can deteriorate with time and possibly harm the artwork. For best results, have an acid-free mat and backing board cut at a frame shop. Or try mattesandmore.com. Never use masking tape to adhere the painting to the backing board. Use framer's tape which you can find at an art supply or frame shop. After you have assembled your painting in its mat and frame, hang it in a place that does not receive direct sunlight.
