An Ode to Time Travel
There are few things in the world that truly satisfy. Sure, they may taste good or provide some entertainment but they lack an ingredient. An aura. Chrono Trigger is such an item that possesses this aura for myself, and from what I've gathered, many others as well. It has a simple enough plot: Boy wants to do great things, meets a girl, embarks on adventure. Simple. Chrono Trigger is far from simple, however. The game itself is an adventure. It could be best categorized as an RPG. The graphics are average for their time, but the journey one embarks on is far from average. Time travel. Medieval times. Knights. Magic. Revenge. Death of loved ones. The importance of conservation. Always being mindful of where you came from. How our ancestors shape who we are and the environment we know and love. Simple ideas that all come together and create a magical world. As a kid of perhaps 10, I loved this game. I loved the characters and the simple dialogue. I loved the epic music and it created a mood for the environs. I loved the interesting characters that came from all walks of life. I loved every bit of it. I opened the game today, having not played the original SNES cartridge since I had sold it to Funcoland to finance an N64. This was at the hayday of Goldeneye and I had to be part of the excitement. I regret that day because Chrono Trigger is a one in lifetime find. It's perfect in every way. I popped the game in and all the great memories came rushing back. Being a kid, recess, drawing pictures, pretending characters were my crush, imagining myself as a wizard, of sorts. All the great things are still there. Chrono Trigger is elegant in every way. This game is not cheap, but great things seldom come free. If you own an SNES, buy this game. It's a treasure and a steal at any price. If I were to estimate the amount of fun I have had because of this game it would surely top 200 or 300 hours. A typical movie last about 1.5 hours and costs you about 10 dollars admission. 1.5/10 = .15 hours of entertainment per dollar. Let's look at Chrono Trigger. 50 bucks on average, but around 250 hours of entertainment. 250/50 = 5 hours of entertainment per dollar spent. This doesn't even take into account a movie which provides poor entertainment. I'm telling you this game is classic.

A Quest Worth Embarking On
I remember the days when I would rent this game, week after week. Those were the days where you could still rent a Super Nintendo from a local rental joint and it would come in this giant black case that seemed more plausible for an instrument. Week in, week out I would beat this game. Throwing apples, using Ice Magic to best Pete, and enjoying the scenery/ambiance that Disney is so well known for. This was the life, or at least as close to the life as 7 year old me could conjure. Over the years, I have certainly grown more cynical or perhaps more aptly characterized as seasoned. The world is a different place, less magic and wonder. Throughout my years I've played a great deal of games. I've spent countless hours in pursuit of happiness, while undertaking pursuits that should have made me happy. But they failed. Don't get me wrong, I'm far from unhappy. That being said, it does take something special to reignite the flame of joy. This game is that special something. This game is cheap, relatively easy to come by, and will provide an afternoon worth of entertainment. Do yourself a favor and purchase this item, because trust me when I steal a line from my 7 year old self, "This is the life."
