The ultimate, historical Louis Armstrong live set. Mandatory listening.
There are only two things wrong with this CD. The first is the sound is a bit low-fi by todays' digital standards. It's still good to listen to, but you can hear the scratches a lot, and the sonic quality can vary from track to track, sometimes even within parts of the same song. The other thing wrong is that this was not filmed. It would have been an even bigger classic then it is. And this IS a classic. This live set set the template for the rest of Armstrong's career, freeing him from that monster of a big band he had chained to his leg. This set up was closer to his Hot Five and Seven days at Okeh, and he pretty much stayed with it for the rest of his touring days. For sound quality, I enjoy the Fresh Sound version, with a picture of Louis in brown sepia on the front cover the best. The band is fantastic, inspired. You could probably listen to Armstrong's solos for a year and still be able to take new ideas home from them. Just buy it. It's a great intro to a misunderstood American genius, who was taken for granted too long.

A Miles Davis jazz classic that still holds up in its' original form
IN PERSON AT THE BLACKHAWK was originally a 2 lp live set that came out in 1961. One lp covered Friday night, the other covered Saturday night. Columbia Jazz Masterpieces released it as 2 separate CDs at the end of the 80's. This is Friday night, or the first lp. If you have limited time and money, these 2 discs are the way to go. You can get both discs cheaply because a lot of fans are throwing them over for the full concert multi disc sets of each separate night released just a few years back. Many think the sound superior to this original Columbia Jazz Masterpieces release. It also helps both discs are out of print and ebay discount houses are unloading them. Thing is, the master tapes are 50 years old. To these ears, the biggest difference between the original lp and this first disc is a new horn solo on ALL OF ME. Other then that, you're just grateful for the lack of scratches and cleaned up sound. Now I'm sure the new discs of the full concerts are worthwhile if you have the loot. But THIS version of LIVE AT THE BLACKHAWK was a jazz classic for years. Before the original concerts were available, this was the first way they were released. A lot of us had jazz explained to us listening to the shows in this edition. In my case, it was a relative who knew Miles Davis. (This was less impressive then it sounds. He could merely ask questions about drinks and food and not get a rude reply.) How do you grade the sentiment? The history? The memories? The liner notes by Ralph Gleason were published in his book CELEBRATING THE DUKE. The 2 lp set is one of 13 albums by Miles he recommends to the reader. Ralph was there the night it was recorded, and no where in the notes does he say anything like;"If only you had heard the stuff they left out..." There are worse ways to go other then picking up this overlooked (and now passed over) release.

The one essential Cab Calloway CD to get from this rock and roll forefather
A lot of folks don't know there even IS a link between Cab Calloway and rock and roll. But it works like this: Cab was the inspiration for a LOT of Louis Jordan's sound. Jordan even recorded at least one of Cab's songs ("A Chicken Ain't Nothing But a Bird'. Cab's version is available on this CD) Louis' producer went on to do Bill Haley. Louis' guitar player (Paul Hogan) was an inspiration for Chuck Berry. The tracks sound amazing. Recorded between 1939 and 1947 for Okeh, they're clear and clean and have been restored wonderfully. The dates put them in the jive era, you can hear the influence of Goodman and Miller on the arrangements and the vocal accompaniment. The songs are sequenced to sound good next to each other, not strictly in order they were recorded...Cab, I think, would have liked it this way...he always wanted a good time and a good sound FIRST. Both Jordan and Calloway have been given the cold shoulder by a lot of critics. Both were said to be too HAPPY and having too much FUN to be serious music. (Erroll Garner had to put up with the same thing...they said he was too BEAUTIFUL to be jazz..) Make no mistake, this is carefully arranged and wonderfully performed music that was made to make you happy and still be top drawer. Guys like Dizzy Gillespie cut their teeth with Cab's band. Many regard Calloway's outfit as second only to the Ellington unit. 22 songs, all mono. All will make you groove. My copy cost me less then 4 bucks. At any rate, it's relaxing, beautiful and...rocken'
